Happy Birthday, Rescue Dogs! Top 3 Ways to Spoil Your Fur Friend This DOGust.

Lindsay Katz | July 21, 2023

Thought your rescue pup had no birthday? Think again! August 1st has become a nationwide celebration for all dogs whose birthdays are unknown. This holiday started in 2008 when staff at North Shore League America of New York wanted to make sure all dogs got the chance to celebrate their special day.

So, what’s the best way to celebrate DOGust?

There’s no right or wrong way– the main theme for this holiday should be love, celebration, and, of course, proper spoiling!

Our team came together to brainstorm our top three ways you can best honor and spoil your fur friend:

  1. Throw your dog a birthday “pawty.” Grab the treats, get out the inflatable pool, and invite your dog’s favorite humans and fur friends alike! Does your dog like any particular music? How about some celebratory doggy outfits? Have fun with it! Set up some obstacle courses, or just let them run around and play. The sky’s the limit with creativity and fun!
  2. Take your dog on a special adventure. Go on a hike, visit a dog-friendly park, or even just take them for a long walk around the block. Your dog will love spending time with you, and they'll appreciate the extra exercise.
  3. Dogs love to be pampered, so why not give them the royal treatment on their “birthday?” Give them a special meal. Cook your dog their favorite food or buy them a special treat from the pet store. You could even make them a homemade cake or pupcakes!

In addition to spoiling the rescue pups you call family, consider donating or volunteering for local dog shelters. For example, you can donate to your local shelter to help cover the cost of food, medical care, and other necessities for the dogs. Or, if you’re able, volunteering your time at a dog shelter is a great way to give back to your community! From walking dogs, cleaning kennels, or socializing with the animals, there are so many ways to make a shelter dog’s day. Who knows? Maybe you’ll fall in love and end up adopting one or two more dogs into your family. :-)

However you choose to celebrate the day, DOGust provides a great opportunity to raise awareness on shelter and rescue dogs that need our help and love. Do us a favor? Give your pup a kiss on the head for us.
